Charles Simonyi is co-founder of Intentional Software Corporation. The company, started in August 2002, accelerates innovation by integrating the business domain experts into the software production process.
Simonyi was employed by Microsoft Corporation from 1981 to 2002, where he held titles of Director of Application Development, Chief Architect, and Distinguished Engineer. While at Microsoft, Simonyi hired and managed teams that developed Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and other best selling software applications. Simonyi worked at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) from 1972-1980 where he created the first WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) text editor called Bravo. Born in Budapest, Hungary, Simonyi earned his B.S. in engineering mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley, and a doctorate in computer science from Stanford University. He received a honorary doctorate from the University of Pecs in Hungary, in 2001. Simonyi has been a member of the National Academy of Engineering since 1997, elected for his contributions to "widely used productivity software.” He is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2008, and a Correspondent Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Simonyi has been serving on the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton since 1998 and elected to be the Chairman of the Board starting in 2008. He has endowed a chair for the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University and a chair for Theoretical Physics at the Institute for Advanced Study, among numerous other educational and charitable contributions through the Charles Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences.
Simonyi is an avid collector of modern art, enjoys classical music and is an experienced pilot. He participated in the 14 day long Soyuz TMA-10 mission to the International Space Station in April 2007.
MAGNUS CHRISTERSON: Vice President, Product Management and Marketing
Magnus Christerson joined Intentional Software Corporation in 2004. As Vice President Marketing and Product Management, Christerson is driving the commercialization and go-to-market strategies for Intentional Software Corporation's technology.
Prior to joining Intentional Software Corporation, Christerson held multiple positions at Rational Software (acquired by IBM in February 2003) including Director of Product Management and Director of Product Strategy. From 1995 to 2003, Christerson was instrumental in building an industry leadership position for Rational Rose, the leading UML product for visually designing and generating software programs. Christerson joined Rational in 1995 when Rational acquired Objectory, a software startup where he held various software development and product management roles. Christerson is co-author with Ivar Jacobson of Object-Oriented Software Engineering - A Use Case Driven Approach, Addison-Wesley 1992. He holds a M.Sc. in Computer Science and Technology from Lund Institute of Technology at the University of Lund, Sweden.
HARTLEY PAUL: Vice President, Operations & General Counsel
Hartley Paul formed Intentional Software Corporation as outside counsel, and joined the company as an officer two months later.
Paul practiced law with the firm of Lane Powell PC in Seattle since 1963, where he specialized in business and securities law for private and publicly held enterprises. Paul earned his AB degree from Dartmouth College in 1959, and his MBA degree from Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth in 1960. At Tuck School he was a student in one of the first computer classes ever presented in any business school, thanks to the foresight of professor John Kemeny who co-authored the BASIC computer language. He returned to the Northwest to attain his JD degree from the University of Washington School of Law in 1963, where he was elected to Order of the Coif National Law School Honor Society and served as Business Editor of the Washington Law Review.
Having raced on the Dartmouth Ski Team, Paul continues to ski often during the winter and pilots his family float plane in British Columbia during the summer.
François Stieger, CEO Intentional Software International Sarl
François Stieger leads Intentional Software's international group as CEO of Intentional Software International Sarl. He is responsible for managing all elements of international operations, including development of strategic alliances and building international markets for Intentional Software’s technology. Stieger is based at the international headquarters of Intentional Software International Sarl in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Immediately prior to joining Intentional Software International, Stieger was senior vice president and general manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa for Verisign, the leading provider of critical infrastructure security services for the Internet and telecommunication markets. He held this post since April 2003, and was responsible for Verisign’s business throughout that region. Prior to joining Verisign Stieger was a partner of Amadeus Capital, a leading European venture capital firm based in London. In 1996, Stieger established BroadVision’s European operations. Under his management through mid 2001, these operations grew to more than 400 employees and US$104 million annual revenues. He was also personally involved in BroadVision’s very successful initial public offering on NASDAQ in June 1996, and its public offering on the Neuer Markt in Frankfurt in November 1999. On a larger scale from 1987-1992, as vice president Stieger established and managed operations of Oracle Corporation for southern and central Europe. Stieger is a graduate of the University of Strasbourg’s Institute of Technology.
Francois is passionate about motor sports and enjoys following the Formula One Grand Prix circuit, where he has many friends.
